FRMC Meeting Minutes

Meeting Date and Location

The Thursday, April 11th  FRMC Member Meeting was called to order by President Larry Standiford at Romano’s Italian Restaurant at 5666 S Windermere Street in Littleton, CO.  As far as any of the long term members could tell, the attendance was a record 37 people with the first weeknight meeting in nearly two years, two big events scheduled over the next two Sundays, and several members of the Denver Mustang Club considering joining FRMC as the reasons for the large turnout.

Old Business

The Club has 35 paid family memberships so far for 2024.  And there were 3 more prospective members at the April 11th meeting.  Our most recent additions include Jeff Wilson who owns a 316,000 mile 1996 GT with its original drivetrain and interior, Ken and Chriss Weathers from the Denver Mustang Club who own two beautiful EcoBoost Coupes, a 2015 & 2018, that have been on several past cruises with us, and via the mail, Dick and Candy Thompson who own a 2018 GT convertible.
Occurring in early April was the MCA’s 60th Anniversary Celebration of the Mustang at Barber Motorsports Park in Alabama.  While it appears no one from FRMC made the long trek to Alabama, Mike Bateman from the Early Mustang Club of Colorado was there and posted numerous photos on his Colorado Mustang Stampede Facebook page.
The Annual National Mustang Day Cruise is Sunday, April 14th with 113 cars registered as of Friday, the 12th.  We’ll be following that on Sunday, April 21st with FRMC’s joint tour with SAAC Colorado of the amazing Shelby American Collection museum in Boulder.   Tom Ferguson sent out separate emails describing both events during the last week of March, but if you missed them, contact Tom and he will send them to you.
Mike Thomas gave a detailed daily description on the upcoming Memorial Day weekend Yellowstone Mustang Rally Run to Cody, Wyoming including overnight stays in the historic Irma Hotel.  There will be a poker run over Bear Tooth Pass in Montana and a chuck wagon dinner at the Red Lodge Inn.  Saturday night is the Awards Dinner and Sunday is the autocross to loop through Yellowstone.  Past rallies are featured in the Yellowstone Mustang Rally Facebook page and several FRMC members will be embarking on this journey with Mike.  He is also planning several other Mustang enthusiast outings including a Guanella Pass/Georgetown cruise and another run to Rosie’s Diner in Monument.  Mike is also working on a “once in a lifetime” Route 66 “The Mother Road” excursion that could be done in sections or the whole route from Chicago to Santa Monica around the second week in September.  Mike will be reporting periodically on these plans as they develop.
Wendell Salas provided an update on the upcoming Rocky Mountain Mustang Roundup to be held on Thursday to Saturday June 13th to the 15th.  The Mountain Tour will be a drive up Pikes Peak from 10 to noon on Thursday, June 13th with the Autocross held on Friday at Pikes Peak International Raceway.  There will be no open track day at PPIR this year, but the popular Show ‘n Shine and other concluding activities will finish off in Cripple Creek with the host hotel, the brand new Chamonix Casino Hotel.  Also, the 2024 Bullitt Nationals will be held at the Roundup and Wendell noted there is always a need for some FRMC volunteers to assist with events.  Please let him know if you can help.  The website for registration and event details is included in the Events of Interest section at the end of these minutes.
With the driving season getting closer every month, your officers are looking for ideas for driving/show events to keep our Mustangs busy.  Some suggestions discussed so far include:
  • A road trip to Colorado Springs to view the National Museum of World War II Aviation
  • Visit the Colorado Model Railroad Museum in Greeley
  • Tour the Colorado Railroad Museum in Golden
  • Visit the Wings Over the Rockies Air and Space Museum in Denver
  • Tour Cars Remember When in Englewood with their always changing inventory
  • Wendell Salas has researched track days at High Plains Raceway for members and this will be something we explore once the scheduled events in April through June are behind us.

Other suggestions are very welcome.  Contact one of the officers with your ideas as FRMC is always looking for more volunteers and input.

New Business

Some additional events of interest not covered in the minutes before are coming up soon.  The 11th Annual Lincoln Tech Car Show at the Lincoln College of Technology,  11194 E 45th Ave, Denver, CO, is scheduled for April 27th and is highly recommended by Art Apple and John Revesz.  Information is available at  CPacheco@lincolntech.edu
The Annual Taste of Philly/Max Taps Charity Car Show at the corner of University and County Line Road in Highlands Ranch will be held on Sunday, May 19th starting at 10am.  Donations will go to veterans organizations and is organized by the Highlands Ranch Hot Rodders Club.  This has been a great opportunity to seek out new FRMC members in the past.
On Saturday, June 29th the Stang Evil P-51 Mustang fighter plane will be at the Rocky Mountain Metro Airport (Sheltair Aviation, 9107 Rocky Road, Broomfield, CO) at 8am for photo shoots with your Mustang for a suggested $20 per car donation to Cathi’s Table.  There will be an onsite photographer or you can use your own equipment, and coffee and donuts will be provided.  Everybody’s Mustang should have a picture with a P-51 and many of our members have them from past opportunities.  Details are available from Dick Thompson (thompson660@cs.com) or 303-929-5533 and are also posted on the FRMC website Bullitt-N Board section.
More into the future, John McNurney suggested a potential FRMC Holiday Charity Donation to the Colorado State University Formula SAE RAM Racing Team.  RAM Racing is a student-run group that designs, builds, tests, and races formula-style race cars to compete against other universities across the globe in an engineering-focused exercise that embraces students from all backgrounds and bridges the gap between academic theory and real world industry challenges.  Graduates of the program are among the most accomplished and sought-after talents in the nation.  RAM Racing has met its fund raising goal for 2024, but this could be an avenue for giving late in the year for their 2025 program.  Information is available at www.engr.colostate.edu/organizations/ram-racing-fsae/
The next FRMC meeting will be Thursday, May 9th at 7pm at Romano’s Italian Restaurant in Littleton at 5666 S. Windermere Street.

Treasurer's Report

Per Treasurer, Tom Ferguson, the Club had $1,521.82 in the Vectra Bank checking account as of the meeting date.  There were no new expenses to pay since the March meeting.  FRMC dues for 2024 are $50.00 and can be sent to Tom at 525 Fox Hunt Circle, Highlands Ranch 80126.  Please make the dues checks out to FRMC rather than Tom.
Tom is holding the name tags for new members Todd Griffin and Jim and Susan Johnston and polo shirts for Kristina Conley and Jonathan and Ginger Lackman.  Please come to a future event to get your tags and shirts, guys!

MCA Report

President Larry reiterated his hope that FRMC could earn another coveted MCA President’s Award in 2024 and cited some progress on that front with several members already registered for the MCA National in Des Moines in August and John McNurney having an article on his 1965/66 carryover Shelby GT350 accepted for publication in the MCA’s Mustang Times magazine.  Also, although it doesn’t count toward the President’s Award, several FRMC members have also registered to attend the Rio Grande Mustang Club’s MCA Regional Show in Albuquerque May 18-19 and Wendell Salas or Larry will be communicating with that group to arrange a group drive to that event.
